How do you train a kitten to stop eating people food?
Due 3/17/10-It's A Boy! asked:
We got a new kitten and apparently the people who had him before us fed him scraps non-stop because every time we go to eat, he is right there begging so we have to put him in a different room. And he doesn't want his kitty food, he won't eat it, we've tried all kinds of different kitten food too and he only wants people food. We haven't fed him any so I know he is hungry but he still won't eat the kitten food and he acts like he is starving to death when we try to eat. What should I do?

Cat Training Guide To Success
Personally, I would do what you’re doing: separate him from you while you’re eating. Also, I would pick with ONE food source (we use Meow Mix for our cats) because cats/kittens look for familiarity in everything. All you have to do is insist on him eating HIS food. If you spot him trying to nibble on your food, immediately take the food away and say firmly, “No”. Just do it over and over again. Persistence can work miracles. Don’t give in with what he wants. Remember: separate him from human food, remove the food when you see he’s near, stick with one food option for him (at least until he’s older), and just insist that he eats it. It WILL work. And if it doesn’t, ask your vet for their opinion.

When you’re eating, separate your kitten away from the table and place it’s food in front of your kitten.
If your kitten pads back to your dinner for more, then place it back on the floor again by it’s food bowl.
If you’re feeding him dried food, that is usually the case. Switch to a different substitute, normally wet pouches such as Whiskas.
The right thing to do would be put a few scraps of your dinner in his bowl and mix it in with his wet food. He’d smell the scraps of your dinner in his bowl (make sure you do not feed him onions, cheese, raw meat– which can infect him in some cases, cow’s milk; etc.) Once he smells the food he’ll dig into his food bowl searching for the scraps and at the same time eating up his rightful.. cat food.
If he likes the taste, he’ll lean towards it more and start eating with more ease. TIP!!! : Also, spray your table with unharmful disinfectant and he’ll hate the smell of it. The chemicals will also be strong to his senses and he won’t be able to smell your dinner, only the spray.
Hope this helps and good luck!

I would just continue what you’re doing, don’t give him scraps and eventually he’ll have to eat his own food and start liking that. When I first brought my kitten home he was all over anyone who had food and no matter what we did he wouldnt go away, finally I started thumping him, sounds mean but it worked, after a couple weeks he quit bothering people. just give it time
