Catherine asked:

hi. i have 2 cats who are about 6 years old. ive had them since they were 1 week old (someone abandoned them!) and ive really grown attached to them. but they need training. how do u train them to stop clawing the furniture, stop using the bathroom outside the litter box, and stop yowling all the time?? the yowling part is what i need most, because it annoys both me and my pictures. please help me, i really need it.
they have each other to play with, and they yowl at night
i clean their litter box everyday, feed and water them everyday, and they have a scratching post. i think they mite be afraid of the scratching post, but im not sure y.

Easy Guide To Cat Training Aids

they are not dogs, they do not just take commands. Most traiing works best when it starts early.

You can redirect some behaviors with a squirt bottle filled with water, but much of this behavior sounds like they are trying to tell you something.

peeing outside the box usually means the box isn’t clean enough. scratching furniture means they don’t have proper things to scratch, get scratching posts, horizontal and vertical and spray the furniture with bitter orange stuff from the pet store,

Yowling may be the result of boredom, it all depends on when they yowl. Get them toys and make sure they have space and places to play and climb.

First of all cats will be cats but you first of all need to protect the furniture get coverings etc then make the litter box attractive and make sure you atleast have more than one about the yowling i think they are either hungry or bored thats what my cat used to do until she moved out if it does not work tell me

You can put sticky tape on the areas they usually scratch to deter this habit. Once they stop you can remove the tape.
My cat also won’t use a scratching post but likes the welcome mat!

Do you know what breed they are? Because some breeds like Siamese just like meowing and there’s not much you can do about it. Also if they are females and not spayed they may by in heat. If they yowl all the time then it’s probably just the breed.

Sorry don’t know about the litter pan that much I never had a probably with my cat and her litter pan. You can try getting another one. I know some cats don’t like sharing a litter pan. And you can try putting it in a different room. Or have two of them in different rooms. Or maybe get different litter.

Here are a few items you can use to stop a cat from scratching:
A bottle/can with something noisy in it
Aluminum foil
Anything citrus smelling (spray/rub in on whatever they’re starching)
Can of air (spray)
Double sided tape
Scratching post
Softpaws
Spray that stops them (there all different kinds)
Trim their nails back once a week
Water bottle spray

Also you can try getting some catnip & rub it on the scratching post or they sell catnip spray. Also it might not be big enough. A scratching post needs to be as tall as that cat (about 32”). Or you can get one that is horizontal. They sell ones that hook on doors. That’s the first one I got for my kitten and that’s her favorite one. I just lay it on the ground. One similar to this one:

Or you could get one of the cardboard ones.
