How do I train a two year old outside cat to be an inside cat?

TelaR asked:

Well, my cat is almost two years old, because of recent traumatic things, i really wan't my cat to be an inside cat, i seached the web and all the inside cat training is kittens only. The cat has been outside all it's life, with being inside every now and then. We've had it in the house for about a month now, it keeps smeowing, waiting by the door so on. It does use it's litter box though. So can someone help me with this?

Quick and Easy Guide To Train Cats

try and litter train it first, every time it eats pick it up and put it in its litter tray, if that doesn’t work take some old poop and put it in the litter box.
After that take your cat out on a leash and harness outside, and keep him in the rest of the time, just keep him inside and don’t let him out, be careful, he may try and get past your feet.

You could built a sort of cat balcony on your window for him to sit on,
Say your making a box, the top and bottom are wood (bottom possibly carpeted) and the sides all except one are mesh (one side needs to be open to face your window.
Hold the box up on legs and attach to your window ledge, this way he can get outside for fresh air, but not run off.

Maybe you should try doing it in steps. Let the cat be outside for part of the day, then make the cat come in when it’s time. If you think the cat will run away, maybe it’s best you keep it inside, where it already is. My mother turned an outside cat into an inside cat though, and every chance he gets, he runs away for days at time because she doesn’t give him “outside” time. If you have the space outside, I’ve also heard great things about ‘cat runs’, they are basically HUGE cate kennels outside, with lots of play area in them.

Untold Cat Training Secrets – We’ve uncovered all the cat training secrets for you to make it the best training ever and others envious of your planning

it really will depend on the cat. I had two indoor/outdoor cats and when one didn’t come home one day I immediately kept the second cat in. She asked a few times to go out, but never pushed it when I didn’t let her. The cat that disappeared would have been a major pain to keep in because he was always insistent on going out.

you are coming up on winter, which is generally the time when cats stick closer to the house anyway. when your kitty asks to go out, distract it with either play time or some treats or some cuddle time (which generally will annoy them so they’ll go else where)

provide play time to wear your kitty out. you want to provide the exercise he isn’t getting now that he isn’t going outside.

also providing a climbing area is helpful. There are wonderful cat trees to help with this. I find pretty inexpensive ones on ebay (as compared to your local pet store)

if your cat is very insistent about going out, then use deterrents. Let him out when it is raining or snowing (if your in that area) or have someone hide outside and make loud obnoxious noises every time he steps out the door.

You could also look into a harness (or walking jacket) and leash for your kitty to enjoy the outdoors safely. There is also cat proof fencing (which will keep the kitty in the yard, but not the dangers out) or cat enclosures (which will keep the dangers out)
