How can I train my cat to stay out of the basement?

The Shadow asked:

Like most cats, my cat likes to disobey the rules. She knows she's not allowed in the basement because when I'm doing laundry and she sneaks down there I'll yell at her and she'll run back upstairs. I try to keep the door shut but sometimes I forget. How can I better train her?

Keep the door closed.

Or… keep a pitbull in the basement.

To the poster below me… have you ever tried using a pet gate on a cat?… doesn’t work really well unless it’s effectively a door …. in which case… keep the door closed.

Just for your info it is extremely hard to train a cat. So what I would do would be to put one of those pet gates that you can buy at a pet store and put it at the door way.

Cats won’t learn if they decide not to. And, cats are naturally curious.

I would put a spring on my basement door so that it closes after you, each time.

I say keep the door shut or cat proof the basement. You could spray her with water or shake a penny can every time she goes near the doorway but I think that’s cruel.

It’s will be easier to train yourself to close the door than trying to train the cat.

What’s wrong with her being in the basement when you’re doing laundry? You might enjoy her company. She will listen attentively to your complaints and problems. Might be a good time to get them off your chest.

Cat Training Guide To Success

My basement is the one area in the house that isn’t cat proofed and there is no hope of it ever being safe for my cat. My laundry is down there too.

I put a sheet of sticky paws on a plastic mat that I got at a dollar store. I slid it under the door so part was exposed in the hallway (you could see the mat to know it was there). The cat learned to stay away from the door because she didn’t like the feeling of the sticky paws. I positioned it so I could step over it to go downstairs. Secondly, when I went to the door I told her ‘back!’. I use that command to get her to back away from the door to the house so she doesn’t run out so it’s familiar to her. She’d move away, I’d go downstairs and close the door behind me. When I came up, I’d look through the crack at the bottom of the door to see if she was by the door. She usually was, so I’d say ‘back!’ to get her to move away when I opened the door. She did try a couple of times to sneak around the edge of the door, I had a foot, laundry or whatever ready to keep her away as a 2nd level of defense.

You do have to remember to close the door behind you. That’s the only way to keep the cat out. The sticky paws and ‘back’ command reinforced it enough so I usually don’t worry too much as I go in and out. I wouldn’t trust her if I left the door open though! (lol!)

Easy just train yourself to remember to close that door.
