Can you train a dog to not be mean to your cats? and if you can How?

Brooklynn asked:

My dogs don't bite my cats just bark and chase them I tell them no but that just wont cut it.

The cat they bark at now are older so they can handle it.

But I'm getting a kitten soon and don't want them to bark at her because I don't want to scare the darn thing to death.
THANK YOU ;]
ill try the paw thing
and show my dogs the kitten.

THANK YOU EVERYONE :]

Cat Training Guide To Success

show your dog thay you’re dominate of it, and everything else in the house. you should put your hand over his paws (dogs will accept when another dog has heavier and stronger paws than them). and pinch his ears

Cat Training Guide To Success

Contrary to popular belief, dogs and cats are not natural enemies. If they all grew up together, there wouldn’t be a problem. The kitten will have an easier time getting used to the dogs than the older cats. Let the dogs sniff the kitten, (of course hold on tight to the thing), so the dogs know that it is ok as well.

I have a dog who chases my cat. The only reason he does it is because it moves fast. We brought a kitten home who did not run from him and there was no problem. Kittens come with very sharp claws and if the dog wants to get too nosy, it might just get a slap in the face.

If you want to try to train it before bringing the kitten home. you can carry a water squirt bottle around with you and squirt them in the face when they start barking at the cats. If your dog is the type who likes water, then a soda can with coins or other noisy objects in it will also work. When the dog barks, tell them to stop, if they don’t shake the can with the noise that the dog doesn’t like and eventually they will get the hint and stop doing it.

You have to take control of the dogs and show them you are their leader. Put them on a leash and hold them when they are around the cats. Give them a small treat each time they show you they can be calm around the kitties. Keep reinforcing this behavior before the little one comes along or it will be terrified. If they act up, they get no treat. When they calm down, reward them. Dogs learn by gentle, repetitive actions. Choose one word to encourage the better behavior and stick to that work (for example, if you make a loud noise to get their attention when they misbehave then give the treat when they become quiet.) Be kind to them, though. They are only doing what is natural because they weren’t trained when they were puppies. They don’t know any better.

Lots of time and patience. Easier when both are babies. If all else fails try a cattle prod

When I was a kid my dog and cat got along famously. We had the cat first and then we got the dog. I remember the dog was crying when the cat died.

Well you can train dogs for sure not to bark at cats, but then there are basic differences between cats and dogs.

1. A dog loves his master, while a cat loves the house it stays in and not its master. So cats are generally viewed suspeciously by dogs.

2. Though smaller in size compared to a dog, cats behave as if they are more superior and intelligent. They try to fool the dog. This really bugs the dog when the limit crosses.

3. While fighting dogs usually don’t hurt the cat badly, but cats hurt dogs very badly.

4. Adult dogs are man’s good and faithful friend, while adult cats are a real sh1t.

Get you kitten and let him grow with the dog; you will see that they are good friends till it grows up.

Cat Training Guide To Success

i have read all the answers and got lots of laughs from all of them but yes cats and dogs can get a long i have proof i have raised cats in dogs together in my house for years i have even seen them sleeping to gether and to put back to back to protect each other. if the cat gets upset by being chased it will stop and smack the dog up along side its head but some of my cats and dogs would pick on each other just out of shear boredom i have two dogs and two cats the older dog is a Schnauzer and she likes to lay on the landing and when the cats come she likes to bark at them up or down and the younger dog is a lab and the youngest cat likes to grab at her tail i have never seen them get mean to each other only if one goes to far then the other will say ok enough

You don’t just tell the dog “no” you make the dog stop. I have 3 dogs and 3 cats.. there is no messing around. If the dog chases the cat I make them stop. The all learned not to, my dogs and cats all get along. Sounds like you just don’t have full control over your dogs..

Any dog will want to chase a cat and sometimes bark but you have to take control and stop the behaviour. When you see the dog about to chase the cat give a good reprimand, when the dog listens reward him. Don’t let your dogs run the house, you are the boss, don’t take no for an answer if you tell them to do something and they don’t listen you MAKE them listen.

A dog won’t take you seriously unless you follow through with things. They know that you saying “NO don’t chase the cat” is meaningless because you won’t enforce it. Start enforcing it..
